RUNNING SW WITH MS VPC

USING MS VIRTUAL PC TO RUN SW

Here is Michael Krallmann's description how to run the game under MsVPC:

You can get this emulator for free at
microsoft.com VPC page.

This is going to be quite a hassle though, as you have to install some "vintage" OS on it, before launching any of your old games. I recomend Windows 98SE.

How To Install Win98 in a VPC Virtual Machine

Posted on roudybob.net by RoudyBob

Though the Win98 installation into VPC is a bit tricky, it does work.

I just went through it here and verified that it is indeed possible. Note that I used Win98SE, but Win98 should be the same. Also, both are officially supported by MSFT if you go take a look at the VPC site, you might find some more help there - http://www.microsoft.com/virtualpc/.

Here's a rough estimate of the process:

First, you will need the following:

  1. A working copy of VPC 2004 installed and running.
  2. The installation CD for Win98 or an ISO image of one. The physical CD would be the best bet.
  3. The installation key for Win98.
  4. A Virtual PC floppy image of the Win98 bootdisk. You can grab one from my site at win98seboot.zip.

Now, here is a rough estimate of the steps to create the Virtual PC that you'll be installing Windows 98 into:

  1. First, delete any of your previous attempts at created a VPC. You shouldn't need any special fat32 drives installed in your "host" machine. The "host" machine is the physical computer that you're running Windows XP Pro on.
  2. Next, create a new Virtual PC by starting VPC 2004 and selecting, "File", then "New Virtual Machine Wizard".
  3. Click "Next" at the wizard introduction.
  4. Select "Create a virtual machine". Click "Next".
  5. Type a name for your virtual machine - something like "Windows 98 Second Edition" would work just fine. Click "Next".
  6. Select "Windows 98" for the operating system. Click "Next".
  7. Accept "Using the recommended RAM". Click "Next".
  8. Select "A new virtual hard disk". Click "Next".
  9. Accept the default for the Virtual Hard DIsk name and location. Click "Next".
  10. Click "Finish". You're done creating the Virtual PC.

Next, you'll need to "boot" your virtual machine and being installing Windows 98:

  1. Select the Virtual PC you just created in the "Virtual PC Console" and click "Start".
  2. The VPC will start and you'll get a message telling you to select the proper boot device. This is OK.
  3. Right-click on the floppy disk icon in the status bar of Virtual PC. Select "Capture Floppy Disk Image". Point to the .IMA bootdisk for Win98 that you downloaded earlier. Or if you have a physical floppy disk that is a Win98 bootdisk you can use that too, just select "Control Physical Drive A:" instead of "Capture Floppy Disk Image".
  4. Click inside the Virtual PC. Press any key and the VPC should boot up.
  5. Once booted into DOS, you'll need to run FDISK to create a partition for Windows 98. You'll then reboot. Keep the floppy disk / disk image selected when rebooting as you want to boot off of the disk one more time.
  6. Format the new partition you just created with FDISK by typing "format c:". Press ENTER.
  7. Once the drive is formatted, you should be able to switch over to the Windows 98 CD (E:) and run setup from the root of the CD. The rest is a typical Windows 98 install. Just don't forget to disconnect (or eject) your Win98 bootdisk image/disk when instructed.
