VDMSound is a open-source project for better sound emulation under Virtual Dos Machine in windows.
Here is the Nick's description how to run the game under VDMS:
Getting the sound running with VDMS was a problem until I used those steps:
- Install Swars completely to HDD - must be :\swars
- Edit Config.ini to reflect paths ('CD' and 'InstallDrive' both to hard disk)
- DL and Install Syndwfix.exe
- DL and install VDMSound + VDMLaunchpad (latest versions)
- Edit Play.bat to run "Setsound" before Main in sequence
- Create a VDM Launch pad config for Play.bat ("Run with VDMS" and 'Custom config'):
- Close DOS on exit
- In 'Compatibility' enable VESA and LowLevel Network
- NO troubleshooting / joystick / AdLib / MIDI
- Soundblaster enabled with default (SB 16, 220, IRQ 7, DMA 1 + 5)
- Run Play.bat VDM Shortcut and in "Setsound" choose:
- No MIDI
- Digital audio - SB 16 - Auto Settings (or manual 220, IRQ 7)
- Save and exit "Setsound" to load the game
- Syn Wars should work with IPX and Sound!
EXTRA IMPORTANT! Use - and + (not on keypad!) to adjust the speed DURING a mission.
Only have to do this once for every time you launch the game.
My comments:
- If you choose "No MIDI", you will not hear tension music.
- If you'll modify paths in Config.ini, you won't be able to play CD-Audio music inside game
